Newbattle Abbey College
ACT is working with Newbattle Abbey College to take forward projects set out in the College's recently prepared Masterplan and 10 year Development Strategy, which looks at all buildings on the estate and sets out options for the development in line with the College's education strategy.

Newbattle Abbey was originally a Cistercian Abbey that was founded by David I in 1142.The Main Bulding dates from the 16th Century, with later alterations and additions by such Architects as: William Burn and David Bryce. In the 1580/90's it became the primary seat of the Lord Lothian, and remained so until 1937, when the 11th Marquis handed the Estate to the Universities of Scotland so that it may become an adult education establishment. It currenlty offers courses in Liberal Arts aimed at educationally disadvantaged and English Language for International Students.
The Abbey building is set within a designed landscape, which is included in the inventory of Historic Gardens and Designed Landscapes.
In February 2008, ACT sumbitted a Project Planning Grant Application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund the production of a Condition Report, Conservation Plan and Other Specialist Reports to assist with a project towards necessary repairs and restoration work.
HLF at their meeting on 28 April 2008 awarded the project a Project Planning Grant of £48,600. The grant will go towards the cost of producing a Conservation Management Plan, an Audience Development Pland and an Education and Training Plan. A Project Conservation Officer will be employed to co-ordinate the work of preparing the plans and specialist reports including surveys relating to environment, internal historic stonework, plasterwork, tiling and joinery surveys.
The Main Design Team have now been appointed and have commenced with site inspections. The Conditions Survey is underway and Specialist Consultants have been approached for tenders, and work on this is expected to start in the next few weeks.
