Trinity Church, Irvine

A-listed church designed by the famous Victorian Architect F.T. Pilkington, built 1863-64 (and steeple added some six years later), occupying a striking position in the heart of Irvine and forming a landmark on the skyline.

The building’s condition has deteriorated over the last 10 year. It is owned by Trinity Trust, a charitable Trust comprised of local individuals.

ACT worked with the Trinity Trust on a Feasibility Study which identified potential end uses for the building that are now being pursued. These include converting the church and hall into a public house and restoring the spire to provide an interpretation centre with a lookout tower to view Irvine and the surrounding area.

The Spire offers the opportunity to bring the Town Centre, a facility to exhibit artefacts and visual images relative to the following key aspects of community and cultural life:

- History of the Town of Irvine (A Royal Burgh - with 700 years of history)
- Key figures associated with Irvine - for example - Robert Burns, Edgar Allan Poe and John Galt.
- Irvine Development Corporation

The height of the Spire offers an opportunity to create a viewing gallery for panoramic views of the River Irvine, the Harbour and Firth of Clyde. It would act as a visitor attraction for tourists to the area and would allow local residents and school children to learn more about their local heritage and traditions.

ACT is currently seaking funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund in order to assess the viability of a Heritage Centre within the Spire.
