Scottish Historic Buildings Trust is working with the Greenlaw Town Hall Trust to find a viable new use for this "A" Listed Building in the Scottish Borders. The Town Hall was built by the Earl of Marchmont, (1829-1831) at a total cost of £6,500, and is regarded as the most successful design, of Berwickshire Architect, John Cunningham. This fine example of Scottish Greek Revival Architecture was intended to serve as a Courthouse and new County Building for the Berwickshire County.

The Town Hall has been used for an assortment of purposes including: serving as a Courthouse until 1904, used to billet Polish Soliders during World War II, converted to a short lived swimming pool during the 1970's, and as a sales room and storage facility for an antique dealer.

The Hall has been in the ownership of the Trustees of Greenlaw Town Hall since 1960's with the aim of delivering a long term and suistanable use for this building. The building has been categorised as "at risk" and "in poor condition" on the Buildings at Risk Register Scotland. So much so, it has been unused for 16 years and is now at risk of demolition, having been declared unsafe for public events.

An Options Appraisal, undertaken in June 2007,concluded that the goal is to create a sustainable, community focussed future for the Town Hall once restored. Subsequently, an application was submitted to Historic Scotland for a Capital Repairs Grant to make the building wind and watertight until a sustainable end use can be found. A project to bring this "A" Listed Town Hall into viable use has been awarded a grant of £500,000 by Historic Scotland. This grant award is the positive seal of approval needed to move the project development forward. Subsequently the Monument Trust (a Sainsbury Family Charitable Trust) awarded the project a grant of £200,000 in November (including £30,000 for enabling works. In addtion, the project has received the strong support of the Scottish Borders Council with two grant awards.
